Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra promotes Filipino folk songs
National artist Ryan Cayabyab and Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra worked together to promote Filipino folk songs on the music streaming platform Spotify.
The Philippines has a rich culture when it comes to music and literature. In this modern era, the younger generation barely hears folk songs that originated in the country and were created by Filipino artists decades ago.
Cayabyab and PPO worked hand-in-hand to present these folk songs to a wider audience and to the younger generation.
Based on the article in The Philippine Star, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It was established in 1973 and for its golden year, the PPO 50th Anniversary Gala is set to be held at the Metropolitan Theater on May 12 at 8 p.m.
Along with this, PPO and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in partnership with Widescope Entertainment will launch Serenata on Spotify. It is a seven-track album featuring Filipino folk songs and melodies from different regions of the Philippines.
Serenata was originally released in 2014. This album featured well-loved folk songs such as “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” (Kapampangan), “Sarung Banggi” (Bicolano), “Ti Ayat Ti Maysa Nga Ubing” (Ilocano), “Sampaguita” (Original Spanish “La Flor de Manila”), “Malinac lay labi” (Pangasinense), “No Te Vayas De Zamboanga” (Chavacano), and “Walay Angay” (Ilonggo).
Ryan Cayabyab will give a new flavor to the aforementioned folk songs but definitely without compromising the traditional musical properties.
CPP aims that through this continuous effort, the younger generation would have the consciousness of Philippine cultural heritage and awaken the public’s interest in folk songs.
