2 Siblings Working as OFWs in Hong Kong Return Home After Years of Hardwork
Two siblings working as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong made a surprise return home to the Philippines after several years of hard work abroad.
The siblings were unable to return home earlier due to the pandemic, and their mother fell ill with cancer. They were also in debt to their employers and decided to postpone their return to have enough money for their mother’s medical expenses.
The two siblings worked as domestic helpers in Hong Kong, and their last visit home was in November 2019 when their eldest brother passed away.
Unfortunately, the pandemic hit in 2020, and in June 2021, the husband of one OFW and their child, as well as the uploader named Diana, tested positive for COVID-19. They were isolated for almost two months, causing stress for their mother, who was already dealing with a lot.
In August of the same year, their father was confined to the hospital for gallstones and was hospitalized for 20 days. This added to their financial burden as they had to borrow money from their employers to pay for the hospital bills.
Their mother’s diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow cancer, in September 2021, made the situation even more challenging. They had noticed a lump on her collarbone, but due to the pandemic, it was difficult to get her to a hospital for a checkup.
She began chemotherapy in February 2022, but it was too late as the lump had already grown significantly. The family was devastated.
To lift their spirits, the uploader and her sister decided to surprise their mother with homecoming, but their eldest sister was unable to join them because her employers had tested positive for COVID-19.
The video of their surprise homecoming was uploaded to social media, and it garnered unexpected attention. Diana did not expect it to go viral, but she hoped that it would reach kind-hearted people willing to help with their mother’s medical expenses.
The story of these OFW siblings highlights the sacrifices that Filipinos abroad make for their families back home. Despite the challenges they faced, they persevered and continued to work hard to support their loved ones.
