Five OFW friends in Sharjah have approached the embassy for assistance after being detained following a complaint about a video they posted on social media. According to GMA News, the buddies submitted the video to TikTok for fun on March 12, 2023.

However, after someone complained about what they did, the five of them were arrested. They were mistaken for prostitutes, according to the brother of one of the OFWs.

Toots Ople, Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), provided information about the case of OFWs. Based on the report, they have been arrested, taken to jail, assigned a case number, and will now await the Sharjah court hearing scheduled, Ople said.

“They have been arrested they were brought to jail and may case number na at hihintayin na lang natin yung schedule ng court hearings sa sharjah court. Meron na silang legal retainer na nakuha para irepresent itong karapatan nitong ating limang OFWs sa korte,” said Ople.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy and Labor Attache in the UAE are set to meet with the employers of the five OFWs, and plans are being made for them to visit. According to Ople, the case has been referred to the prosecution, and the court hearing date is just around the corner.

However, according to the UAE’s cybercrime statute, our compatriots might be fined and imprisoned for five years for what they did. Ople also mentioned that their culture is different, thus we must be really polite.

“UAE is strictly implementing its cyberlaw and is also very sensitive to actions against their customs and morality. Iba ang kultura nila eh so we have to be very very respectful. Yung sa pamilya wag kayo mag-alala babantayan din namin ang kaso and kokontakin namin kayo direcho para makakuha kayo ng updates,” he said.
