Dalai Lama, Religious Leader Issues Apology for Kissing Young Boy on Lips
DALAI LAMA – A Tibetan religious leader issued a public apology after asking a young boy to suck his tongue.
On Monday (April 10, 2023), the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, issued an apology in response to a video that surfaced on social media.
The video shows the 87-year-old Dalai Lama kissing a young boy on the lips and then sticking out his tongue, asking the child to suck it, as a part of a gesture of respect during an event in McLeod Ganj, a suburb of Dharamshala city in northern India, on February 28, 2023.
“His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” the statement said in a verified Twitter account.
“His Holiness often teases the people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras, He regrets the incident,” the statement added.
The video quickly spread on social media, with Twitter users expressing outrage and disgust, calling it “disgusting” and “absolutely sick.” Rakhi Tripathi, a Twitter user, expressed shock and concern for the child, asking what the child must be feeling in response to the video.
The Dalai Lama has long been regarded as the global face of the movement for Tibetan autonomy, although his international visibility has diminished since winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
He has received fewer invitations to meet with world leaders and celebrities, partly as a result of his reduced travel schedule as he has aged, but also as a result of China’s expanding economic and political might.
The Chinese government has labeled him a “wolf in a monk’s robe” and accused him of wanting to divide China.
This is not the Dalai Lama’s first run-in with trouble. In 2019, he apologized for remarks he made in an interview with the BBC in which he stated that if his successor were to be a woman, she would have to be “attractive,” which were widely condemned around the world.
