Romualdez Warns Hoarders of Onion and Garlic Amid Increasing Prices

House Speaker Martine Romualdez warned the hoarders of onion and garlic amid the skyrocketing prices in the market.

The days of exploitative garlic and onion merchants and hoarders in the country are coming to an end, said Leyte’s 1st district congressman in a statement Sunday. Romualdez has issued a strong warning, threatening to arrest abusive onion and garlic hoarders.

The House Speaker argued that they are possibly to blame for the market’s ongoing growth in the price of agricultural items. He highlighted that they had acquired information that exploitative merchants were keeping garlic and onions in warehouses with the goal of releasing artificially scarce supplies of the stated product so that they could raise its price.

“May mga impormasyon kami na tinatago nila ang mga sibuyas, at ngayon pati mga bawang na rin para kapusin ang suplay at tumaas ang presyo ng mga ito,” Romualdez said.

According to the report, the lawmaker said despite the current harvest season and the arrival of imported onions, the retail price of the product remains high. As a result, Speaker Romualdez promptly directed the House Committee on Agriculture and Food to launch a comprehensive investigation and, if the evidence is acquired, to pursue appropriate criminal charges against those responsible for the illegal action.

According to the House Speaker, this is an act of economic sabotage. According to the official, the House panel will investigate the prospect of recommending to the President the calibrated importation of garlic and onion so that exploitative businessmen are obliged to release their stocks and cut their prices, thereby minimizing consumer pain.
