First Aeta to Pass Criminology Exam Achieves Dream to Become a Cop

DEXTER SANTOS VALENTON – The first Aeta who fulfills his dream to become a cop after passing the criminology exam.

An Aeta lad, 23, becomes the first member of their indigenous community to pass the just completed Criminology Board Exam. Valenton lives in Barangay San Ramon in Floridablanca, Pampanga.

Aside from the board exam, Valenton is the first known Aeta to pass the Professional Regulation Commission’s criminologist licensure test. Valenton may become the province’s first indigenous police officer as a result of his accomplishments.

“I am elated. My only goal was to pass, but I am being praised for bringing honor to the Aeta [community],” Valenton said based on the article in Inquirer.

Valenton’s accomplishment was confirmed by Elizabeth Baybayan, chief of the province’s social welfare and development office. According to Baybayan, Valenton was the first Aeta to pass the criminology exam, in addition to the other Aeta who passed the teacher licensure exam.

On his Facebook page, Governor Dennis Pineda expressed his congratulations to Valenton. The post went viral as netizens congratulated Valenton on his success.

Meanwhile, the young Aeta lad feared that his education would be “dakal kasakitan (full of suffering)” because his parents could hardly afford to send nine children to school. He said that “sakadora (traders)” held farmers, including his parents, in debt.

According to a December report, he persisted in finishing elementary and high school by trekking for hours to school and enrolling in college by taking advantage of the provincial government’s scholarship program, which helps 8,374 Kapampangan children. He said that the governor, among other people, paid for his review as well as his board and housing.

Being a decent cop had been his dream since he was a child. Following the 1991 explosion of Mt. Pinatubo, previously isolated Aeta villages gained access to education, healthcare, roads, water, and shelter.
