Earthquake Northern Samar: 5.9 Magnitude Quake Rocks Mapanas

EARTHQUAKE NORTHERN SAMAR – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) logged a 5.9 magnitude quake in Mapanas.

In the Philippines, Phivolcs is the state agency monitoring quake activities. It releases bulletins everytime it hit a certain area in the country.

EARTHQUAKE TODAY DECEMBER 9, 2022 – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Northern Samar today, Friday.

Following the 4.3 magnitude earthquake that recently jolted Maguindanao del Norte, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Northern Samar. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 5.9.

The earthquake today, December 9, 2022, in Northern Samar was tectonic in origin. It struck Mapanas at 02:33 p.m.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake today December 9, 2022 that hit a part of Northern Samar was located at 13.19°North, 125.89°East – 105 km North 41° East of Mapanas with a depth of origin of 038 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that there are no damages expected from the said quake but there may be aftershocks. According to the agency, the following instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

  • Intensity III
    • Mapanas and Palapag, Northern Samar
  • Intensity II
    • Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar
    • Prieto Diaz and Bulusan, Sorsogon
  • Intensity I
    • Legazpi City and Tabaco, Albay
    • Mercedes and Daet, Camarines Norte
    • Pili, Camarines Sur
    • Hernani and Can-Avid, Eastern Samar
    • Hilongos, Dulag, Kananga, Abuyog, Alangalang and Baybay, Leyte
