DepEd Prohibits Solicitation for Holiday Celebrations and Announced that Christmas Parties in Public Schools Not Mandatory
The Department of Education announced that Christmas parties in public schools are only voluntary and solicitations for celebrations are prohibited.
Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte signed the DepEd Order (DO) No. 52 stating that no student should be excluded during holiday celebrations in schools.
Duterte said that Christmas costumes, decorations, and exchange gifts are now mandatory but optional only. Both students and staff are forbidden from contributing, participating, or using the money for these events under any circumstance. They may, however, make voluntary contributions of any kind, including monetary ones.
DepEd also advised schools to recycle their existing Christmas decorations rather than purchase new ones. Additionally, it shouldn’t be necessary for staff members and students to create decorations, especially for these events.
School Christmas parties are permitted as long as they don’t conflict with the lessons that are scheduled to be taught to the students and as long as they don’t jeopardize the delivery of departmental services.
Private schools, community learning centers, state and local universities, and colleges may decide to use the DO’s provisions as a guide when organizing their own Christmas parties or other events, according to the Department of Education.
Additionally, the organization advised staff to “strive for a genuine celebration of hope, unity, and service for others every Christmas season.”
“Celebrations in public schools and DepEd central and field offices should be simple yet meaningful, keeping in mind the true spirit of the season and the austerity called for by the difficult economic times,” DO No. 52 states.
