BuCor Deploys K-9 Police Dogs as Part of Cleaning New Bilibid

K-9 POLICE DOGS – The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) deployed 30 police dogs at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

The New Bilibid Prison which is located in Muntinlupa City is the biggest penitentiary across the globe. However, aside from it being a mega penitentiary, it currently holds more than its capacity.

A few months ago, the authorities announced that a lot of inmates will be freed in the last quarter of the year. It is part of the efforts to decongest the mega penitentiary. Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Boying Remulla ordered the checking of inmates who have finished serving their sentence.

Several inmates were freed last month and more inmates are expected to have their liberty back this November and December. However, amid the decongestion efforts, the New Bilibid Prison is currently surrounded by issues.

The efforts in the pursuit of the reforms in the New Bilibid under the leadership of BuCor acting director-general Gregorio Catapang Jr. has started. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, K-9 police dogs were deployed at the compound.

According to the report, 15 small breed dogs that can sniff cellphones and illegal drugs and 15 trained large breed dogs were deployed at the New Bilibid Prison. The deployment of K-9 police dogs took place after cans of beers, laptops, cellphones, drugs, weapons, and chargers were found inside the compound.

According to Catapang, they will also be using various technologies to boost the interception of illegal items and prevent the prison personnel from conniving with the inmates. The BuCor Chief said that they will be giving cellphones with a multi-layered security system to the personnel in the purpose of “guarding the guards”.
