BuCor Frees 357 Inmates who Finished their Sentences, Granted Parole

BUCOR – The Bureau of Corrections released 357 inmates who have finished their sentences and were granted parole.

In every country, there are several penitentiaries where people who have been convicted by the Court of committing a crime against the law serve their sentences. In the Philippines, there are several facilities but the biggest is the New Bilibid Prison.

The New Bilibid Prison is known as the largest mega prison in the world. It is maintained by the Bureau of Corrections. It has an ideal capacity of around 6,400 inmates but it is currently housing more than 28,500 inmates.

Recently, more than a hundred inmates were freed from the New Bilibid Prison. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, BuCor freed 357 inmates from different facilities in the country.

According to the report, out of the 357 inmates freed by BuCor, 235 of them have finished their respective sentences while 122 inmates have been granted parole. Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta expressed gratitude to Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla. She expressed her hope that more inmates will be freed by December.

According to Remulla, managing the New Bilibild Prison citing that it is the biggest mega prison in the world is challenging. He called to the Bureau of Corrections to exercise “compassionate justice” in managing the inmates.

Aside from the 102 inmates freed from the New Bilibid Prison, some of the inmates freed were from the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City; San Ramos Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City; Leyte Regional Prison; Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan; and Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte.

The newly-appointed chief of the Bureau of Corrections, Retired General Gregorio Catapang, promised to implement reforms and improve the management system.
