EARTHQUAKE NOW IN ABRA – A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the province of Abra, late Tuesday evening, October 25.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) listed a Magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Abra. It struck at 10:59 PM with the epicenter at Tineg, Abra, and a depth of 28 kilometers. Phivolcs warned of damage and aftershocks.
Phivolcs said the following are the reported intensities:
Intensity V – Sinait, Ilocos Sur
Intensity IV – Baguio City
Instrumental Intensities:
Intensity V – Gonzaga, Penablanca, Claveria, Cagayan; Pasuquin, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
Intensity IV – Bangued, Abra
Intensity III – Baler, Aurora; Ilagan, Isabela
Intensity II – Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya; Urdaneta, Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Madella, Quirino
Intensity I – Dinalupihan, Bataan; Bulakan, Calumpit, Malolos City, Plaridel, Bulacan; Pasig City, Navotas City; Cabanatuan City and San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Guagua, Pampanga; Umingan, Sison, Bolinao, Infanta, and Bani, Pangasinan; Polillo, Mauban, and Infanta, Quezon; Tanay and Taytay, Rizal; Ramos, Tarlac; Iba, Zambales
Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc announced class suspensions both in public and private schools and works in government offices on Wednesday “to prioritize the inspection of infrastructure damage”.
A “moderately strong” Intensity IV in Baguio City was also felt. The earthquake was tectonic. Tectonic quakes are caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
There is no tsunami threat following the 6.7-magnitude quake but people must be vigilant for aftershocks.
In a previous article, Abra was also the epicenter of a strong quake with magnitude 7 shaking last July 27 which destroyed structures and killed people.
