Intense vibrations in a distant area damaged homes and caused power outages in some areas as a result of a severe earthquake that slammed southern China on Monday, according to official media. At least 46 people were confirmed dead.

17 fatalities were reported in Ya’an City, according to CCTV, while 29 fatalities were reported in the nearby Ganzi Prefecture. The report mentioned that buildings in the surrounding megacity of Chongqing and Chengdu, the provincial capital where millions of people are confined to their homes under a tight Covid lockdown, were both shaken, according to locals who spoke to AFP.

The southwest province of Sichuan experiences frequent earthquakes, notably in its western mountain range, which is a tectonically active region at the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.

The quake was the largest to strike Sichuan since one of magnitude 7.0 struck the Aba prefecture in August 2017. A magnitude 8.0 earthquake with a focal point in Wenchuan struck Sichuan in May 2008, killing almost 70,000 people and causing significant damage.
