Maid In Malacanang Movie: Bishop Tells People To Boycott This

Following the issues surrounding the Maid In Malacanang movie, it gained another criticism.

MAID IN MALACANANG MOVIE – Darryl Yap’s film gets noticed by a Catholic bishop who called out people to boycott this.

Director-writer Darryl Yap wrote and directed the film “Maid In Malacanang”, a controversial film that was accordingly made to show the side of the Marcoses during their last three days in Malacanang. Allegedly, this film distorted some information in history.

And among the most talked-about scenes, the most viral of current times is the scene of late former president Corazon Aquino, a character portrayed by Giselle Sanchez. In the scene, a part that showed some of the events of February 1986 when the Marcoses are about to leave the country, Cory was depicted playing Mahjong with the sisters.

In a previous article, Sisters of the Carmelites Monastery of Cebu slammed the scene and released a statement. The nuns cried foul over this particular scene. Sister Mary Melanie Costillas, Prioress of the Carmelite Monastery in Order of Discalced Carmelites of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, wrote the statement.

The specific mahjong scene was accordingly “malicious” and the “attempt to distort history is reprehensible”.

The statement also stated:

“The truth was that we were then praying, fasting and making other forms of sacrifices for peace in this country and for the people’s choice to prevail. While in our prayer, we were constantly in fear that the military would come to know of the whereabouts of Ms. Aquino and would soon be knocking at the monastery’s door.”

And following all these controversies, someone from the religious group of the country also speaks up against the film. San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza called the film “shameless” and told people to boycott it. The bishop even added that the people behind this should also express their apologies.

“The producer, scriptwriter, director, and those promoting this movie should publicly apologize to the Carmelite nuns, to President Cory Aquino’s family, and to the Filipino people,” Alminaza said in a report based on CBCP News.

He challenged the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to act on this responsibly. His call-out has been rooted in the same specific scene that made the nuns of Carmelite flinch.

According to the statement from the nuns, the former female president sought refuge in the monastery. It was allowed because they see it as a contribution to ending the dictatorial regime. And the depiction in the film would trivialize their deed that helped restored democracy in the country.
