Carmelite Sisters react to Maid in Malacañang’s depiction of Nuns w/ ‘Cory’

Carmelite Sisters released a statement on the controversial ‘Maid in Malacanañang’ movie

Carmelite Sisters – Sisters of the Carmelites Monastery of Cebu reacted to the Maid in Malacanañang‘s depiction of nuns in a scene with “Cory”.

Photos that showed a scene where “Cory,” played by Giselle Sanchez, and the nuns were playing mahjong, circulated on social media and this did not sit well with many netizens. Supporters of former President Cory Aquino slammed the said scene in the movie by director-writer Darryl Yap. For them, it was not just a distortion of history but also an act of disrespecting the nuns.

In a recent video posted on the Facebook Page of SunStar Cebu, the Carmelite Sisters released a statement as their reaction to the said scene in the movie. Through Monsignor Joseph Tan of the Archdiocese of Cebu, the nuns clarified their stand.

The Sisters stressed that the production team of Maid in Malacañang did not ask them about what happened at that time when they granted refuge to Cory Aquino in the monastery when she came to Cebu after the People Power broke out in February 1986.

They also clarified that their vocation primarily requires them to pray and so they would hardly have time to do recreational stuff like playing mahjong. The Sisters also recalled that when the former President was with them, they were fasting and praying as their “contribution to help resolve the political turbulence” at that time.

Monsignor Joseph Tan also said that the Sisters are for the unity of everyone and that they would like to continue to pray for everyone. In his personal opinion, Tan said that people should learn to look at things according to their genre. He said that obviously, the movie is “historical fictionalization.” For him, although it could be based on places and events in history, there is still a certain amount of changes that details may not be as accurate as what was previously told.

The Monsignor also asked the public not to overreact to the situation. “Watch it as you probably watch any movies,” he said.
