Cabugao, Ilocos Sur Residents Caught Tons of “Monamon” Fish After Powerful Abra Quake
Tons of “Monamon” fish have been caught in the coastal area of Cabugao, Ilocos Sur following the powerful quake in Abra.
Over the past few days, the magnitude 7.3 earthquake in Abra becomes the headlines of local news outlets and various social media pages. The powerful tremor causes severe ground shaking, which brings devastation to various areas across the province.
The strong tremor has been also felt in the National Capital Region and its nearby areas. The violent shaking causes damage to numerous houses and establishments in the affected areas and even cuts down power lines.
After the powerful quake in Abra, the residents of Barangay Sabang in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur consider the appearance of small fishes locally known as “Monamon” in shallow waters. The abundant harvest gives joy to the residents in the area.
The fisherfolks in the area were able to catch numerous crates of ‘monamon’, which were sold at a very affordable price. Some of the fish will be used for personal consumption.
According to Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 1 director Rosario Gaerlan, the recent earthquake in Abra possibly disturbed the creatures under the sea and swipe them into Cabugao’s shoreline.
“Mga events na ganyan [lindol] mayroon din epekto ‘yan pero mga short term lang ‘yan [pagpapagilid ng isda] siyempre [nabulabog ang mga isda] sa dagat, then although kapag tumigil na ang paglindol is okay na ang mga isda” Gaerlan said.
The barangay captain also said that fishermen can usually catch ‘monamon’ during this season.
