What is the STEM strand and the other strand in senior high?

STEM STRAND – A guide to choosing the right senior high school strand for students – STEM strand, HUMSS strand, and others.

The K to 12 Program is covering Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education for students. The 12-year basic education is six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School (SHS). This program was implemented in order to give students enough time to master their skills.

This program also aims to “develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship”. And in senior high school, students get to choose among the three designed tracks that focus on a particular set of skills.

These three tracks are:

  • Academic
  • Technical-Vocational Livelihood
  • Sports and Arts

Under the academic track are these strands and they are the following:

  1. Accounting, Business, and Management (ABM)
Students who want to become a businessman or businesswoman someday must take this strand. Other courses related to this specific strand are Business Administration, Tourism Management, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Accountancy, Real Estate Management, Entrepreneurship, and others that are associated with business and management. You can become a sales manager, human resources, marketing director, project officer, bookkeeper, accounting clerk, and internal auditor.
  2. Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
If you have an interest in society, fine arts, design, and communication, the HUMSS is definitely the perfect strand for you. HUMSS is fit for students who aim to have a career in film, mass communication, political science, and literature. They also have a passion for culture, literature, and other aspects of humanity. You may become a teacher, a psychologist, a lawyer, a writer, a social worker, or a reporter someday with the help of this strand.
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)
This strand is best for students who are interested in architecture, engineering, medicine, economics, computer sciences, and other pursuits of the sort that are highly technical in the field of science and mathematics. You may pursue a career as a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, a chemist, an engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, a marine engineer, and a lot more under this strand.
  4. General Academic Strand (GAS)
This strand is created for those who are not yet sure of the career they would want to have in the future. GAS offers a wide variety of courses and learning experiences that may help a student determine what he or she would like to be. Subjects such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Economics, Organization and Management, and Disaster Preparedness are also offered.
