Comelec Finalizes the Format of Debate for Presidential, Vice-Presidential Candidates
COMELEC – The Commission on Elections spoke on the format of the upcoming presidential and vice-presidential debates.
Currently, the candidates for the upcoming election for president, vice president, and senators are dealing with hectic schedules for the campaign. It was last February 8 when the period set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the campaign started.
Grand rallies are taking place in most cities visited by the national election candidates. Amid the campaign period, there are also debates organized so the candidates can lay their platforms and speak on issues.
Last weekend, the CNN Debates were held. The debate for the presidential candidates was attended by nine (9) bets for president except for former Senator Bongbong Marcos.
Initially, the camp of Marcos Jr. said that his attendance at the Comelec-led debate will depend on his schedule. Following his absence during the CNN Presidential Debate 2022, the camp of the standard-bearer of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas said that they wrote a letter to Comelec about his request.
Marcos Jr. wants to discuss the debate format first including the issues to be tackled with the poll body and his fellow presidential candidates. Some presidential bets have negative reactions over the possibility of giving the topics first prior to the event.
Recently, Comelec spoke on the upcoming presidential and vice-presidential debates. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the poll body’s spokesperson, James Jimenez, assured that the debate format will be fair for the presidential bets and it will give them the chance to speak about their platforms.
Jimenez said that they aim to present the format of the debate to the candidates so they will understand what is expected of them and what they are allowed and not allowed to do. With regards to the moderator, the poll body is planning to have a journalist as the moderator of the event citing the profession’s experience in conducting interviews. Currently, they are finalizing the debates.
