ROLANDO TINIO BIOGRAPHY – These are some of the things you might want to know about famous poet Rolando Tinio.
Rolando Santos Tinio is a Filipino poet, dramatist, director, actor, critic, essayist, and educator. He is a Philippine National Artist for Theater and Literature. His greatest distinction is being a stage director. He staged, organized, and administrated productions for the Ateneo Experimental Theater. But it was in Teatro Pilipino that he was able to leave a huge remark by reviving traditional Filipino drama.

He was born in Gagalangin in Tondo, Manila on March 5, 1937. At a young age, he has already found fondness in organizing and directing along with his playmates. He was also a film actor and scriptwriter. In 1955, he was able to earn his degree in Philosophy at the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas. He graduated as magna cum laude. His M.F.A. degree in Creative Writing: Poetry was from the University of Iowa.
From 1958 to 1975, Tinio taught English, Filipino, and theater arts at Ateneo de Manila University. He married theater and film actress Ella Luansing. In 1997, while directing a musical, he suffered from a heart attack. He died at the age of 60 and years after his death, his wife followed.

Among his remarkable achievements is translating Western classics to Tagalog. He has already translated classics like Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, Puccini, and Verdi. Some of his famous translated works are Kiri (1974); Tito Vanya (1976); Hamlet (1979); Pangarap Sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-Araw (1980); Caligula (1981); Romeo at Julieta (1981); Ang Halaga ng Pagiging Masigasig (1982); Sopranong Kalbo (1987), and Medea (1988).
