Malacañang Speaks on Current Issues within Comelec
MALACAÑANG – The Palace broke its silence on the “internal issues” of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) over the cases against former Senator Bongbong Marcos Jr.
Currently, there are three (3) consolidated petitions seeking to disqualify former Senator Bongbong Marcos Jr. from the presidential race raffled in the Comelec’s First Division. The public awaits the decision which is now surrounded by issues following the opposing claims of the commissioners.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon previously revealed that she voted to disqualify Marcos Jr. She believes that there is moral turpitude in his repeated non-filing of his income tax returns. According to her, she believes there is an interference in the cases causing the delay in the release of the decision.
The ponente of the cases, Commissioner Aimee Ferolino, claimed that they did not agree on a deadline in releasing the resolution. Guanzon released her “separate opinion” yesterday after claiming that “they” do not want to include her vote so it will allegedly not reach the Supreme Court.
Guanzon has given Ferolino until Monday to pen the resolution being the ponente of the cases. However, on her part, she tagged her fellow commissioner’s move as an act of influencing and pressuring her stand on the issues.
Amid the “internal issues” in the Commission on Elections, Malacañang believes that Comelec could fix it. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles stressed that the poll body is an independent constitutional body that has its own rules and regulations that govern them.
Furthermore, Malacañang stressed its confidence that Comelec can resolve whatever issues or concerns as it has seven highest officials.
Currently, the Comelec has yet to release the decision on the consolidated cases seeking to disqualify former Sen. Bongbong Marcos Jr. from the presidential race in 2022. The consolidated petitions are handled by a three-member division.
