Mohamed, 24, is in Cameroon with the Egyptian national team, which has advanced to the African competition’s final 16 round. Mohamed, a forward for Galatasaray of Turkey, is a student at the Cairo University.
Mohamed had enrolled to take the exam at a Cairo university, but when an administrator realized he wasn’t showing up, he filed a complaint. According to the article, the imposter said that he was merely trying to help his friend Mohamed, and that he had taken the athlete’s exam three times.
The event has sparked outrage on Egyptian social media, particularly because practically everyone in Egypt is aware that Mohamed is presently playing in Cameroon. Authorities are currently looking into whether Mohamed directed the imposter to take a test on his behalf and if so, what the consequences would be.
It was dubbed “the stupidest crime of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries” by one Twitter user, who added that “the 100 million Egyptians who follow football throughout the continent know that Mostafa Mohamed is in Cameroon.” It was unclear whether the player had requested that the other man take his position or what the punishment would be.
