Man Plots Fake Kidnapping to Earn Money from Ransom Demanded to Mother

Authorities arrested a man after he plotted a fake kidnapping allegedly to earn money from the ransom demanded to his mother in Hong Kong.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, a 20-year-old man was detained in Hong Kong after it was determined that he had only pretended to be kidnapped in order to extort money from his mother by demanding ransom.

When the two suspects sent a video of Mak getting thrashed, Mak’s mother allegedly reported the incident to the police. Mak’s kidnappers are said to have sought a ransom of $38,460 in exchange for his release.

Mak was rescued in Kowloon City on Friday with the intervention of the police, apparently bruised from the attack. A private car suspected of being linked in the case drove away during the operation, rejecting police requests to stop.

It then collided with another vehicle at the Mong Kok intersection of Waterloo Road and Boundary Street. No one has been arrested in connection with the car accident, which was characterized as reckless driving.

However, as the investigation advanced, it was determined that Mak had merely pretended to be abducted in order to obtain funds to pay off his debts. As a result, Mak was arrested as well, and he could face charges of wasting police time.

Yu, 20, and Hung, 23, were identified as the two ‘kidnappers.’ Anyone convicted of making a false report causing wasteful police employment in Hong Kong risks a maximum penalty of six months in prison and HK$2,000 fine.
