Update on Typhoon Odette Response Efforts
TYPHOON ODETTE – The Philippine government is set to release P6 billion for the response efforts to the impact of Odette in the country.
Internationally called Typhoon Rai, Typhoon Odette is the strongest storm to have hit the Philippines this 2021. Lives were lost, properties were damaged, and source of living were ruined by the impacts of the typhoon.
The Philippines has prepared for Odette but the calamity visibly has its own strength. Prior to its entry to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), massive preparations that include preemptive evacuations in flood-prone areas were conducted.
Odette brought strong winds and heavy rains in most parts of the southern and central Philippines. Several cities were left by the storm submerged in floodwater. Many families lost their loved ones and houses to the typhoon.
Some houses and infrastructures were destroyed by the floodwater and the strong winds while others got hit by falling trees. Many people now are staying in evacuation centers and temporary shelters following the onslaught of the typhoon.
Recently, the Philippines’ budget department spoke on the response efforts for the victims of Typhoon Odette. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the PH government is set to release a total of P6 billion before the year-end.
According to Budget Acting Secretary Tina Canda, out of the said P6 billion total amount, P1 billion was released last Friday. The Department is set to release another P1 billion to the local government units of the cities severely hit by Odette.
Canda expressed that they are set to release P4 billion for the LGUs to be extended to the victims of Typhoon Odette before the year 2021 ends. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte vowed to raise P10 billion for the response efforts. According to the Budget Acting Secretary, the remaining P4 million will come from the national budget next year which might be approved on Tuesday afternoon.
