Breadwinner Call Center Agent Lost Cash Due to Scam

A breadwinner call center agent who was looking for a side gig to earn more lost P44, 000 due to smishing.

A 21-year-old call center agent named Erika Sagales invest for a business transaction with the aim to earn more money for her family but lost her hard-earned cash because of smishing.

Sagales narrated that she received a text message offering a job and she clicked the link given via text message. The link redirected her to Whatsapp and an agent tasked her to do business transactions.

Initially, the young lady thought that everything is fine thinking that she will earn more money until she was asked to pay P44, 000 for investment. She borrowed money from her aunt and pay it for the business transactions.

Unfortunately, the agency blocked her number after receiving the money.

“Naghahanap ako ng part time job kasi ‘yung kinikita ko, breadwinner kasi ako kulang so iniisip ko na makakatulong siya sakin kasi nagkaroon ako ng proof na naka-cash out ako, naka-cash out kami ng tita ko so iniisip ko na totoo siya,” Sagales said.

The call center agent realized that she been victimized by a type of security attack. She said that the attack is bogus link used to steal the victim’s personal information including social security information and credit card data and login credentials.

“Ang hirap ng ginagawa nila, ang ini-scam nilang tao ay mahihirap din, so walang wala, kami mismo yung naghahanap kami ng pera pero kami yung ninanakawan nila ng pera,” the female breadwinner reiterated.

National Privacy Commission Chairman Raymund Liboro warned the public to stop clicking suspicious links from text messages to avoid falling into those schemes.
