Sara Duterte is no longer part of HNP party
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte has resigned from her regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago and her resignation letter was dated November 10.
On November 9, the presidential daughter withdrew her candidacy for her supposed last term as mayor. She stated that her younger brother Sebastian ‘Baste’ Duterte will be her replacement. Prior to this, the incumbent Vice Mayor of Davao City also withdrew his candidacy for reelection.
With that decision of Mayor Sara, many have expected that she will soon announce her plan of running for a national position. Various speculations surfaced. Some believed that she is going to run for vice president and as the running mate of former Senator Bongbong Marcos while her avid supporters are anticipating that she will run for President.
On November 11, reports surfaced that Sara Duterte has resigned from HNP. In a Twitter post of ABS-CBN reporter AG Cruz, a hand-written resignation letter was signed by the presidential daughter.
“It is with profound sadness that I hereby tender my resignation from our beloved party. My support will always be with you and I will always be grateful for all the things you have taught me. Daghang salamat,” the Mayor stated in her resignation letter.
Prior to this, Commission on Election (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said that Sara Duterte can run for a national position but it will not be under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago party because it is just a regional party. Jimenez said that if the presidential daughter aims for the national position, she also needs to be under a national political party.
In an interview, Representative Joey Salceda, a close friend of Mayor Sara, said that he believes that she is aiming for the presidency.
