Fake BFP Member Arrested in Quezon City Over Extortion from Korean Store

Authorities arrested a man posing as a Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) member after being accused of extortion from a Korean store in Quezon City.

Following the arrest in Quezon City, the BFP has issued a warning to the public against impersonating firefighters in order to extort money from their victims. A man allegedly extorted money from a businessman in exchange for a forged fire safety inspection certificate, according to the report.

BFP Extortion

Manuelito Santos, 34, was apprehended in Barangay Talipapa by BFP QC and QC Police Station 3. Melvin Quizada, 45, his accused accomplice, was also apprehended.

According to BFP, the suspect sought P5,000 from the proprietor of a Korean supermarket for a surprise inspection. This is to replenish their fire extinguisher and provide them with a certificate of fire safety inspection.

The suspect identified himself as FO1 Eric Arulfo, was dressed in an orange uniform, and had another piece of identification with him. According to Fire Insp. Rowelle Yarcia, chief of the QCFire District’s investigative and intelligence division, the QCFire District has received complaints from businesses that have been threatened with penalties if fire code infractions are discovered since April.

Frequently targeted are newly opened shops or restaurants that lack permits or have expired fire extinguishers. Only a scanned copy of the fire safety inspection certificate he offers, with the details changed.

Ten identical cases have already been reported to the BFP. They have already been charged with robbery extortion, usurpation of authority, falsification of documents, and the use of motorcycles in the commission of crimes, and have already faced inquest proceedings.

Other victims engage with BFP. BFP clarified that fire extinguishers are not refilled. They also mentioned that there is an application that is used to inspect the BFP initially. Before visiting an establishment, fire inspectors always call the owner and obtain an inspection order.
