China Prohibits Gay Relationships, Requires “Clear Gender” For Characters

CHINA PROHIBITS GAY RELATIONSHIPS – Added to the list of illegal things in China are gay relationships in video games.

Recently, China begun a massive campaign against effeminate men and western entertainment. Previously, they banned actors, singers, and men in the entertainment industry from portraying more feminine qualities.

Furthermore, they also banned western actors to play in Chinese-made films. Among these blacklisted entertainers was Liu Yifei, a Chinese-born American citizen. Now, China takes the ban to the world of digital entertainment.

According to an article from Unilad, several local media outlets in China leaked the list of games approved for future release in the country. Currently, China has over 665 million active gamers making it a large and important sector for developers everywhere.

When the new ban is implemented, characters in video games are now required to have a “clear gender”. Moreover, it stated that developers need to have “moral boundaries” if they want to release games to China.

Moreover, games that “spread colonialism” are not allowed within the country. These include games that get rid of “barbarians” and those that put China in a bad light. As per the article, the memo read:

Games can’t distort facts or deliberately provoke controversy, and historical figures with established narratives must not be refashioned.

Because of the new mandates, China’s local gaming industry had yet to see a single game being approved. Chinese censors reported that games with violence, “wrong value orientation”, along with raunchy content are banned.

It’s certain that online games will be evaluated whether their content fits with the core socialist values, if they spread positive energy, and if they are conducive to fostering virtues and cultivating correct values.
