PNP Chief Says Police Open For ICC Probe
PNP OPEN TO ICC PROBE – The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been a looming presence in the Philippines.
Since President Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs, several rights groups have rallied against it. According to them, countless innocent lives fell victim to the campaign.
As such, rights groups turned to the ICC to investigate the country’s drug war. However, according to Philippine National Police Chief Guillermo Eleazar, the PNP “has nothing to hide“.
According to an article from One News, the PNP said they were open to investigations from the ICC. Furthermore, he stated that they can assure the public that those who did wrong would be held accountable.
Previously, the Palace said that Duterte would “die first” before cooperating with the ICC. Furthermore, the Palace said that the ICC lost jurisdiction over the Philippines after it withdrew from the court back in 2018.
Meanwhile, in the midst of all the issues, Eleazar said that he would let the national government deal with all the politics behind the probe. However, when asked if he was willing to get questioned by the ICC, Eleazar said:
First off, this is more on political, so let the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) or the government handle it first. So eventually, if we get there (to the point of an ICC summons), we will cross the bridge when we get there.
Duterte’s drug war began when he was elected as President. During his campaigns for the presidency, Duterte vowed to eliminate illegal drugs in the country in under 6 months.
