Pokwang talks about the start of her career in show business
Kapuso comedienne Pokwang shared the story of how she started her career in the entertainment industry in the recent episode of Tunay Na Buhay.
Pokie or Marietta Subong in real life has come a long way since a chance in showbiz was given to her. Before becoming a comedienne, she went through a lot of sad events in her life.
In a previous article, it was revealed that Pokie had to deal with too much grief when her five-year-old son died because of a brain tumor. To add pain to her grieving heart, she was not allowed by her employer in Abu Dhabi to go to Japan for her child’s funeral.
In a recent interview by Tunay na Buhay host Pia Arcangel, Pokwang shared that after working abroad, the opportunity to be in showbiz landed on her. She shared that it all started when she and her friends decided to go to a comedy bar.
“Alam n’yo naman ‘yung sa comedy bar ‘di ba, ‘pag pumasok ka doon, pagti-tripan ka ng mga host dun,” she shared. However, Pokie was able to retaliate to the “pang-ookray” that the stand-up comedians did to her.
At that time, the manager of the bar was there and was able to see what she did. “Bago ka kumanta, ‘di ba ookray okrayin ka muna. Eh, lumaban ang Mamang, nakipagsabayan ako dun sa host. Pak! So, nakita ako ng manager, doon nagsimula,” she shared. This started her stint in comedy bars and she became a hit because of her skill in doing impersonations.
Then, Pokwang shared that from this, she was able to have her transition to mainstream media. The segment Clown In A Million in the defunct Kapamilya show Yes Yes Show became her stepping stone to be one of the popular comediennes nowadays.
