VALENZUELA CITY – A Factory employee complained after his employer allegedly paid its salary in centavo coins.

Last Monday (June 28, 2021), Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian met with factory representatives as he investigates the alleged “cruel and unusual” labor practice after a worker reportedly received his salary in centavo coins.

The factory worker is claiming that he received his P1, 056 salary in centavo coins, which is considered as a violation of the labor code. The mayor has also invited the factory owner to meet him but he is currently abroad.

According to the local government unit, the employee is working at Next Green Factory. The mayor also encouraged the workers not to lose hope.

According to BSP Circular No. 537, Series of 2008, employers could not force employees to accept salary in coins. Individuals must accept coins and banknotes in payment of debt in definition of ‘legal tender’.

Centavo coins are acceptable for amounts not exceeding P100 while 1, 5, and 10 peso coins are acceptable for amounts not exceeding P1, 000.
