Court Decision on Charges Vs. Ex-Makati Mayor Elenita Binay Over Medical Supplies Procured

EX-MAKATI MAYOR ELENITA BINAY – The Sandiganbayan released its decision on the charges filed against the former Makati Mayor.

Undeniably, a lot of former politicians in the Philippines are facing charges over certain matters during their political term. One of them is former Makati Mayor Elenita Binay, the wife of former Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay.

Binay is one of the most popular surnames in Philippine politics. At least three (3) of the children of the couple are also known in the field – their daughter, Senator Nancy Binay, and their two (2) children, Jejomar Jr. or Junjun and Abigail Binay, who faced each other for mayoralty in Makati. Mayor Abby won the post in 2019.

The matriarch of the Binay family, Elenita Binay, has served Makati as a mayor as well. She is a medical doctor by profession and she served the people of Makati from 1998 to 2001.

However, following her term, ex-Makati Mayor Elenita Binay faced graft and malversation charges. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, it was over the medical supplies procured in 2001 which amounted to P45-million.

According to the report, two (2) counts of graft and two (2) counts of malversation charges were filed against the former Mayor of Makati City. She faced accusations over irregularities in the purchase of hospital beds, orthopedic beds, and intensive care unit (ICU) beds worth Php 36.431 million; and sterilizers worth P8.83 million. The supplies were procured from Apollo Medical Equipment and Supplies.

Recently, the Sandiganbayan released its decision on the charges against ex-Makati Mayor Elenita Binay. The anti-graft Court acquitted the former Mayor from the 2 counts of graft and 2 counts of malversation charges filed against her.

Binay’s co-accused Ernesto Aspillaga, Dulce Cruz, and Luz Yamane-Garcia who were members of the Committee on Awards then were also acquitted by the court. However, supply officer Conrado Pamintuan and administrative officer Jaime Delos Reyes who were Committee on Canvass members were found guilty of two (2) counts of graft.
