Sen. Grace Poe Turns Off Video Camera, Leaves Senate Session Early

GRACE POE – The Philippine Senator got upset and turned off her video camera during the Senate session following delays on her sponsorship of bills.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic now, there are changes even in the Senate sessions. It is allowed in certain cases for senators to attend the session virtually. There were also previous occasions when sessions were temporarily suspended to give way for the disinfection of the Senate building.

However, whether physically or virtually, certain unexpected scenarios may still take place amid the sessions like what reportedly happened recently involving Senator Grace Poe.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Poe lost her cool during the Senate session and turned off her camera to leave the session early. It was due to the delays in the sponsorship of her bills.

According to the report, Sen. Grace Poe who is the chair of the Senate Public Services Committee was set to sponsor eight (8) pending local franchise bills on the said Senate session. The sitting majority leader then was Sen. Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri.

The period of interpellation of Sen. Poe was moved as Sen. Zubiri called Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian for the sponsorship speech for Senate Bill 2152 which focuses on the improvement of the teaching education in the country. After it, Sen. Joel Villanueva who was also a sponsor of the said measure also gave a speech.

Based on the report, Sen. Zubiri asked Sen. Poe if she could allow Sen. Richard Gordon to speak his privilege speech over the status of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) now. The lady Senator gave his approval.

After Sen. Richard Gordon spoke, Sen. Migz Zubiri reportedly called in Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian again for the bicameral conference’s adoption over the Philippines Research and Establish Institute. Sen. Grace Poe who seemed upset turned off her video camera.

When it was time for Sen. Zubiri to call in Sen. Poe, the Chairman of the Senate Public Services Committee was not anymore responding to the call. A recess took place and when the session resumed, Sen. Zubiri relayed that the lady Senator does not anymore want to participate following the delays.

“I apologize. I know that she has to tackle several franchise bills. Unfortunately, there were a lot of convergents of requests today,” Sen. Zubiri said.

Reportedly, the Senator reminded of the rule they have agreed on in the Senate which is those who are physically present will be prioritized to speak. More updates may be posted soon.
