Grace Poe Says Gov’t Should Provide Assistance to Employees Who Walks Kilometers To Reach Work, Home

POE – Senator Grace Poe urged the government to provide assistance to employees who walk kilometers to reach workplace and return home.

Metro Manila is now under “modified enhanced community quarantine” (MECQ) The government now allows businesses to operate but people are still required to wear a face mask and maintain ‘social distancing.’

Under MECQ, public transportation is limited. Some residents in the city have issues in transportation because tricycles and jeepneys are still prohibited.

Recently, ABS-CBN reporters interviewed a security guard walking in a high way at dawn. He said he walks 15 kilometers every to reach his workplace in Quezon City.

Jeffrey Sario said he is willing to walk 15 kilometers every day just to help the government in the fight against 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). “Okay naman kasi ma-aga pa naman. Ayun bale parang exercise na rin. Sundin nalang natin yung hinihiling ng gobyerno natin kun ano yung mas makakabuti,” he said.

Based on a report from GMA News, Senator Grace Poe said the Philippine government should provide some assistance to the employees who have no work-from-home option. She said this should not be included in the ‘new normal.’

“Scenes of workers walking for kilometers to reach their place of work and return home after their duty must not be a part of the new normal amid COVID-19…”

“The daily commute and walk must not exact a toll on our workers — exposing them to the dangers in the streets and unfavorable weather conditions,” she added.

According to the report, Sen. Grace Poe said the government should find a solution to alleviate the transport woes of the employees while jeepney, bus, and FX services remain limited. She also stressed that Pinoys under ‘no work no pay’ scheme are will be the most affected by this problem.
