Shamcey Supsup on Why Rabiya Mateo didn’t wear NatCos Headpiece

Here’s what Shamcey Supsup said about the headpiece of Rabiya Mateo

Miss Universe Philippines national director Shamcey Supsup-Lee reveals the real reason why Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo did not wear her national costume headpiece.

The National Costume Competition for the 69th edition of Miss Universe was held on May 14 (PH time) and Pinoy fans were anticipating the performance of Rabiya.

She was cheered and lauded when she came out of the stage showcasing her Philippine flag-inspired costume, the piece that the late Pinoy designer Rocky Gathercole created.

However, there were those who were disappointed by the outcome and Rabiya was saddened by this. After the NatCos competition, she apologized to those who felt frustrated with her performance but she stressed that she did her best.

Another issue that surfaced regarding the competition was the fact that Rabiya Mateo was excluded in Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s Top 6 in NatCos. However, the 4th Pinay Miss Universe said that she based her choices on the costume itself and not the performance.

Photos of the so-called “original” design of Rabiya’s costume also surfaced online and it showed that she was supposed to wear a headpiece. However, when she appeared onstage, there was nothing on her head. With this, speculations surfaced regarding the reason why the headpiece was disregarded.

Since the costume of Rabiya was inspired by the flag of the Philippines, many netizens speculated that the restrictions under the Republic Act 8491 or the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines” were the reason.

However, in a recent Twitter post of ABS-CBN entertainment reporter MJ Felipe, she shared the statement of Shamcey Supsup regarding the headpiece of Rabiya Mateo.

I’m pretty sure alam niyo naman na I brought the head dress, the headpiece for Rabiya but unfortunately it was nahuhulog so it’s hard for her to wear it so we decided na kung saan siya komportable because mabigat na rin kasi yung wings niya in the first place,” the Miss Universe 2011 runner-up.

In spite of what happened, The MUP national director stressed that the delegate of the Philippines for Miss Universe 2020 did well.

So sad na hindi niya nasuot but still Rabiya was able to give us a powerful performance,” Shamcey Supsup said.
