Senior Citizen in Cagayan de Oro Dies After Receiving COVID-19 Vaccine

DOH Investigates Death of Senior Citizen After Getting COVID-19 Vaccine in Cagayan de Oro

SENIOR CITIZEN – The authorities are now investigating the death of a 73-year-old man in Cagayan de Oro after receiving COVID-19 vaccine.

One of the pursuits in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 is achieving the “herd immunity”. A huge part of the populace must be vaccinated against the coronavirus disease.

In the Philippines, several vaccines have arrived in the country including AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Sinopharm, and Pfizer. The healthcare workers were the first ones to have been vaccinated against the disease as they are the frontliners.

The senior citizens are also among the top priority in the vaccination ladder. The Department of Health (DOH) has allowed a house-to-house vaccination for seniors who are bedridden under certain conditions like the required approval from the doctor.

However, recently, in Cagayan de Oro, a senior citizen died a few minutes after he received the COVID-19 vaccine. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the 73-year-old man complained of breathing difficulty a few minutes after getting the vaccine.

According to the report, the said senior citizen went through an interview and a check-up before he was given the COVID-19 vaccine, AstraZeneca. It was his first dose and it was administered in a mall.

Dr. William Bernardo from the city’s logistics cluster said that the 73-year-old was right away rushed to JR Borja General Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. According to him, the man got comorbidities. The vaccination was pushed through because the patient was ambulatory or able to walk and does not look sickly.

Currently, the DOH and the local government of Cagayan de Oro are investigating the death of the senior citizen. Mayor Oscar Moreno told the senior citizens to secure a clearance from their doctors before getting vaccinated.
