DTI Supports Religious Gathering Ban To Curb Spread Of COVID-19
DTI SUPPORTS RELIGIOUS GATHERING BAN – The Department of Trade and Industry said they back the decision of the COVID task force to ban religious gatherings in the “NCR Plus Bubble”.
Recently, the government imposed a new form of quarantine dubbed as “NCR Plus“. This includes Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal, and Cavite. Under the new quarantine, mass gatherings, even those for religion have been banned.
According to Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo, the in person Mass could easily be considered as a mas gathering prohibited under Resolution No. 104 by the COVID-19 task force.
Meanwhile, she agreed to those that say that the church can’t be compared to gyms, and fitness centers. However, she explained that although social distancing can be implemented in the church, the saliva from people singing could potentially cause an outbreak.
“In the church, you can observe physical distancing but when you start singing, there’s saliva involved. It can be released, and you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Earlier, Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, expressed dismay after the government banned church activities. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, he said:
In spite of our adherence to strict protocol you lock down our churches during the holiest time of the year and allow 70 percent capacity in fitness centers and 50 percent in establishments for personal care services, including spas?!!! All right. May god have mercy on your souls!
