Only 1.1 Million Learners Did Not Enroll for This School Year, DepEd Says

The Department of Education (DepEd) clarified that only 1.1 million learners did not enroll for the school year 2020-2021.

On Monday (March 1, 2021), DepEd Undersecretary Jesus Mateo said that there are 26.6 million enrollees for both private and public schools for this school year based on the recent enrollment data.

Mateo explained that based on their data, only 1.1 million learners did not enroll for this year. He also revealed that there are 27.7 million enrollees for the school year 2019-2020, which a little bit higher compared to numbers of learners this year.

“Based on our actual number, our data shows there are only about 1.1 learners who did not enroll this school year,” Mateo said.

The agency’s undersecretary that the figures is the result of the Social Weather Stations survey, which has been held on February 24, 2021. He also noted that 13 percent of 4.4 million school-aged Filipinos are not enrolled.

However, Mateo said that the number of dropouts cannot be unidentified yet as well as private and public schools.

“It’s hard to say [how many dropouts we have] because we cannot consider those who transferred out from private schools and went to public schools as such,” Mateo said.
