113 Volcanic Quakes Recorded in Taal Volcano in Past 24 Hours, According to Phivolcs

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs has recorded at least 113 volcanic quakes in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

On Friday (February 26, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded 113 volcanic tremor episodes during the 24 hour period. The tremor episode last for about 34 minutes.

The numbers of volcanic earthquakes are quite higher compared to the 60 tremors with duration on one minute to over an hour recorded on Thursday (February 25, 2021), according to Phivolcs.

Volcanic Quakes

The seismology bureau said that the volcano continues to emit weak steam-laden plumes due to the fumarolic activity. The main Crater Lake even reached a temperature of 74.6°C and pH of 1.59 last February 12, 2021.

Phgivolcs also observe a very slow and steady inflation of Taal region after its eruption last year. A slight deflation has been also noticed around Taal’s main crater.

Currently, Taal Volcano is under Alert Level 1, which indicates an abnormal state. The public is prohibited to enter the permanent danger zone due to the possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and other hazardous activities.
