DOH Records of UK COVID-19 Variant in PH Increases by 18
DOH – The Department of Health spoke on the increasing cases of the UK variant of COVID-19 in the Philippines.
Amid over 200 nations and territories battling against the COVID-19 pandemic, a new variant of the coronavirus disease was detected in the United Kingdom. Several nations have confirmed cases of the said mutation of COVID-19.
The Philippines is one of the countries that logged cases of UK COVID-19 variant. The total cases of the disease recorded by the Department of Health recently rose by 18 bringing the total to 62.
Meanwhile, the DOH is not alarmed by the increasing cases of UK COVID-19 variant in the Philippines. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III spoke about it.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Duque expressed that the increase in the cases of UK COVID-19 variant in the country is due to the boosted “biosurveillance”. According to him, only 2% of all the samples that went through genome sequencing were detected to be UK COVID-19 variant and it is considered as low percentage.
“So napalakas natin ang biosurveillance, kaya natin nakikita at natutukoy itong variants under investigation at variants of concern,” the Health Secretary expressed.
According to the report, DOH Secretary Duque also expressed that there is no need to ban OFWs from entering the country as the standard protocols implemented by the authorities are already enough.
Currently, OFWs who return to PH have to go through RT-PCR testing on the 6th day since their arrival in the country. There is also a strict quarantine and isolation following the turn over to the local government units.
