Leni Robredo Open to Run for President in Next Year’s Polls
ROBREDO – Vice president Leni Robredo said she’s open to running for president in 2022 but admitted that she prefers going for a local post instead.
Vice President Leni Robredo’s name has been floated lately as one of the 2022 presidential bets of the Liberal Party. LP president Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said Robredo is “a high official of the party and is also the highest elected official of the party. So, she is also being considered.”
Her supporters also launched a signature campaign called “I am Ready for Leni.” It has garnered thousands of signatures. Those who are against Robredo also started a different petition urging her to retire from politics.
In her previous interviews, Leni Robredo said it not the right time to discuss the 2022 polls because their focus at the moment was the coronavirus response.
Leni Robredo was recently interviewed by GMA News in Naga City, Camarines Sur. She was asked about her reactions to the calls for her to run for the presidency. The 55-year-old politician said she’s open to the possibility of running for president but she prefers to run for local office.
“If I run for president, I need to be really ready – ready not only for the job but for the fight, and that’s where the problem is…”
“As in all my other elections, I’m open to all possibilities. I’m okay with everything – with various positions,” she added.
Later on, Leni Robredo said she will also be contented in a local office because she would have “direct contact” with people. She said, “So very, very honestly if I had a choice, I would prefer local position.”
VP said she will announce her decision by September. She said, “As of now, I’m open to anything. I don’t want to quarrel with anyone. But for me, wherever I am needed, that”s where I’ll be.”
Later she said, “and running for president is still possible.”
