NHCP reacted to the controversial ‘Panalo’ song lyrics of Ez Mil

The controversial ‘Pinugutan si Lapu sa Mactan’ lyrics of rapper Ez Mil in his song Panalo received a reaction from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Along with the popularity of the young rapper’s performance on the Wish Bus, criticisms came along. It is because of the said lyrics that many commented as a way of altering the history.

Award-winning rapper Gloc-9 was asked to react to this. Although he stressed that artists should be careful of the lyrics, he showed appreciation that the younger rapper apologized.

Despite saying sorry, Ez Mil stressed that he will not change the controversial lyrics. With this, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan wanted him to be declared “persona non grata”.

Regarding this issue, NHCP chairperson and concurrent National Quincentennial Committee executive director Rene Escalante released a statement, based on the article in The Latest Chika.

The commission stated that the young rapper wrongly showed what happened to Lapu-Lapu. Escalante said that they are welcoming new songs with the aim to highlight the history but not to compromise it.

Here is the full statement from the NHCP:

“As we approach the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan this 27 April 2021, let us be reminded how the founders and heroes of the Filipino nation reckoned to Lapulapu and Mactan as sources of pride and dignity.

“Emilio Jacinto, for example, wrote a poem in 1895 reminding the members of the Katipunan that in their veins ran the blood of Lapulapu. Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista memorialized the same in the document proclaiming Philippine independence he penned and read before the Filipino people on 12 June 1898.

“These documents, along with a number of writings and works of art that followed, were guided by the same zeal — and that includes the song titled ‘Panalo’ written and composed by Filipino-American rapper Ez Mil (Ezekiel Miller).

“The National Historical Commission of the Philippines welcomes new songs that inspire our people to think great and be informed of their history. But let us not compromise history and be conscious of our accountability on what we are conveying to our people.

“LAPULAPU WAS DEFINITELY NOT KILLED IN THE BATTLE OF MACTAN. THE BATTLE WAS A VICTORY OF OUR ANCESTORS LED BY HIM.”
