The South Upi Mayor Reynalbert Insular condemned the incident. He said the local police are now gathering for more information.

After the explosion incident, another IED exploded in the market area in South Upi before 11 a.m. Fortunately, the explosives and ordnance team have managed to defuse the bomb.

Insular stressed that the target of the bombers was the cell tower nearby. A few weeks ago, Insular luckily survived an ambush attempt and bomb attack on the side of the road in Pilar Village after he visited the nearby village of Itaw.

The village is already being targeted by alleged members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). One of the civilian passengers who got aboard Insular’s convoy was hit and killed.

This is Insular’s third attempt in life since he graduated in 2016. The land-grabbing conflict is among the issues that make the town of South Upi prone to bombings.
