BORACAY – The mayor of Malay says that the island of Boracay continues to be a safe tourist destination despite the cases of COVID-19.

This followed after some workers at a posh hotel and resort tested positive for COVID-19 or coronavirus disease 2019, according to Manila Bulletin.

“Boracay is safe. There is nothing to worry about,”

This came from a statement from Mayor Frolibar Bautista of Malay, Aklan, who has a jurisdiction over the island.

He calmed down fears that the COVID-19 could spread around the island, and clarified that the cases were already contained and the infected were already isolated.

The said posh hotel and resort will be closed until January 28 for disinfection and contact tracing.

The positive cases were not from the island, and the hotel and resort staff reportedly crossed to mainland Malay town and back to the island.

“The management assured it is doing its best to follow health protocols,”

The mayor also said visitors were required to follow strict health protocols that were set by the national government, and only those with negative tests will be allowed to enter the island.

“The rules are the same. No COVID test, no entry,”

Boracay reopened to domestic tourists after travel restrictions were eased when the lockdown was lifted.

Bautista also warned visitors against using fake COVID-19 test results just to enter the island, based on the report.

“If you have fake COVID-19 test results, you are wasting your time. You would be caught and eventually be placed under quarantine. You’d also face criminal charges,”
