Angel Locsin ‘Body-Shamed’ In Module, DepEd Issues Apology

DepEd Faces Heat After ‘Body-shaming’ Angel Locsin, Issues Apology

ANGEL LOCSIN – After drawing flak on social media, the Department of Education (DepEd) apologized for another controversial learning module.

A few days ago, a photo of MAPEH module from DepEd Occidental Mindoro made rounds on all social media platforms. It seemed that the worksheet called actress-philanthropist Angel Locsin an “obese person.”

The situation in DepEd’s module states: “Angel Locsin is an obese person. She, together with Coco Martin, eats fatty and sweet food in Mang Inasal fast food restaurant most of the time. In her house, she always watching television and does not have any physical activities.”

The learning module then asks the students what could happen to her if she continues her lifestyle. Fans, supporters, and fellow celebrities of Angel defended her on fat-shaming module.

DepEd apologized in a statement issued on Friday evening November 13, for a Facebook post showing part of a module that fat-shamed Angel Locsin by calling her “an obese person.” The official statement of DepEd was signed by the superintendent of the School Division of Occidental Mindoro, Roger F. Capa.

“We would like to express our sincerest apology to the concerned individuals who may have been offended or harmed by this incident. The Department of Education does not tolerate nor condone any act of body shaming, ad hominem or any similar act of bullying both in the physical and virtual environments.”

Roger F. Capa also appealed to the public, however, to stop attacking the teacher. The module was prepared by a subject teacher named Keith Richard Firme.

This Office had already communicated with the concerned teacher and gathered facts from him. Rest assured that this matter will be given serious attention. Meanwhile, we appeal to the public to spare him from any ad hominem attacks as this single mistake will not define him as a person,” he said.
