MANAY ICHU DIES – Former movie producer Marichu “Manay Ichu” Vera-Perez Maceda dies of heart attack, Monday morning, September 7.
Maria Azucena Vera-Perez Maceda or also known as Manay Ichu, a former movie producer, dies at 78 on Monday morning, September 7, due to heart attack. The Maceda family announced with sadness that she succumbed to cardio respiratory failure.
She is one of the founders of Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (MOWELFUND), Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), Experimental Cinema of the Philippines (ECP), Philippines Motion Pictures Producers Association (PMPPA), and Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Her family owns Sampaguita Pictures one of the first and biggest film production companies in the country. As a movie producer, she produced “Dyesebel” and “Batch ’81.”
According to report from PEP, among those who got saddened is the Star for All Seasons and Lipa City representative Vilma Santos-Recto. She said in her statement, “She’s my second mother, she treats me as part of her family. I am very grateful for all her care, love and support to me.”
Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe also expressed her message sharing that she was a “fearless and selfless advocate of artists and the film industry” and someone who spent her life promoting the rights of filmmakers, producers, directors and actors. The senator considers herself lucky to have known her.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III also expressed his sadness with her passing saying, “Our Beloved Manay Ichu will now rest at the bosom of the Lord our God. The Movie industry will never be the same. We owe her a lot. We love her deeply.”
