WHO Reminds Gov’t Not To Wait For Vaccine
DON’T WAIT FOR VACCINE – A virus expert from the World Health Organization reminded governments not to wait for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Even with the developments on COVID-19 vaccines, health experts believe that governments should focus on improving their virus response rather than stall for a vaccine. According to Dr. Takeshi Kasai, WHO Western Pacific director, “production capacity will not really meet the demand [of] the entire world”.
With that being said, he emphasized the importance of improving the virus response rather than hope for the vaccine. According to an article from Inquirer, there are currently eight vaccine candidates ready, to begin with, the third phase of their clinical trials.

These vaccines are being produced by big pharmaceutical companies such as:
- Moderna in partnership with the United States’ National Institutes of Health
- BioNtech, Pfizer and Fosun Pharma
- AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford
- CanSino Biologics
- Wuhan Institute of Biological Products Co. Ltd
- Sinovac Biotech
- Sinopharm
- Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
Russia had also approved the emergency use of their vaccine candidate called “Sputnik V”. However, the third phase of its clinical trials have yet to begin. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said they would provide the Philippines with a free vaccine.
However, in terms of the virus’ mutation, Dr. Kasai said that the virus found in the Philippines was relatively stable. As per the article, Kasai stated:
The mutations have been observed in January and received attention because laboratory data shows that potentially that can increase transmission. The database observing the frequency of this substitute sequence D614G has been increasingly coming from all parts of the world. But so far, in the real-life, we haven’t seen such evidence
