Why Pres. Duterte Cannot Implement Longer Lockdown to Fight COVID-19

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte explained to doctors why longer lockdown to fight COVID-19 pandemic cannot be implemented in the country.

In the past few days, the Department of Health (DOH) is recording thousands of cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines daily. Currently, the total coronavirus cases in the country is at 136,638.

Out of the said total number, DOH recorded 2,294 deaths due to COVID-19 while 68,159 have already recovered. Due to the increasing cases of coronavirus, several hospitals went full capacity.

Doctors and health workers called for an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in certain areas where COVID-19 cases are increasing. The medical field needs a breather to better fight the pandemic.

Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, in response to the call, placed Metro Manila and several nearby areas under a Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ). Recently, he explained why he cannot implement longer lockdowns in the country to fight COVID-19.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the President said that he also wants longer lockdown in the country to fight the pandemic but he cannot anymore stop the people from going out to work. He stressed that the government does not have the fund to support the people during lockdown.

According to Pres. Duterte, the fund approved by Congress to be used as assistance during lockdown has already depleted. Based on the report, the Chief Executive expressed that he will accept people going out to work for food.

“Kung meron ako pambigay, ibibigay ko sa inyo araw-araw para mabubuhay kayo, makakain. Problem is funds are already depleted,” the President said.
