Also known as the Alexandrine parrot, it is a medium-sized parrot in the parrot family Psittacidae. The parrot was named after Alexander the Great.

The bird has placed its populations in the following areas:

The bird is one of the largest parakeets. It is mostly green with a light blue-grey sheen on the cheeks and nape, yellow-green abdomen, red patch on the shoulders, and a huge red beak.

Scientific name

The binomial name of Alexandrine Parakeet is Psittacula eupatria.

Psittacula is a genus of Afro-Asian ring-necked parakeets. It came from the Latin word psittacus which means  “parrot”.

The species name eupatria came from the Greek words eu- meaning “well” and patriá meaning “descent”.

This species has five other subspecies:

  • Nominate Alexandrine parakeet – P. e. eupatria
  • Large Indian parakeet – P. e. nipalensis
  • Large Burmese parakeet – P. e. avensis
  • Large Andaman parakeet – P. e. magnirostris
  • Thai rose-ringed parakeet – P. e. siamensis
