Saudi Arabia Wants Philippines to Bring Home 282 Remains of Filipinos Who Died There

Saudi Arabia King Salman gave the Philippines 72 hours to repatriate the bodies of 282 Filipinos who died in their country.

The world is currently fighting against the pandemic that has claimed over 460,000 lives across the globe – the COVID-19 pandemic. This disease was first recorded in China last December 2019.

China locked Wuhan City, the epicenter of coronavirus. However, starting January 2020, several other nations confirmed cases of the said disease. It is known to be characterized by flu-like symptoms.

However, this coronavirus is new and needs a lot of studies. A person may be positive for the disease even without showing any symptoms like fever, cough, and breathing difficulties.

Saudi Arabia is one of the countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has already recorded over 150,000 cases of coronavirus and more than 1,000 people died of the said disease there.

It is widely known that a lot of Filipinos are working in the said country. Unfortunately, amid the pandemic, 50 Pinoys contracted the disease and lost their lives to it.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello confirmed that 50 Pinoys died of COVID-19 in Saudi and their remains are among those that the king wanted to be repatriated by the Philippines.

King Salman is giving PH 72 hours to bring home the remains of 282 Filipinos there. According to the report, Manila wanted the remains of the 50 Pinoys who died of coronavirus in Saudi to be buried abroad.

Labor Secretary Bello said that three (3) flights will be chartered by DOLE and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to repatriate the bodies of Pinoys who died there. Senator Richard Gordon is set to pen and send a letter to Prince Abdullah regarding the repatriation.

Malacanang has expressed its condolences to the families of the Filipinos who died abroad. According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, the Palace has already ordered the concerned agencies to extend assistance to the families of those who died.
