Duterte Orders Officials Not To Call Him “Your Excellency”, Prefers ‘Mayor’

Pres. Duterte Prefers Being Called “Mayor” than “Your Excellency”

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte ordered the officials not to call him “Your Excellency” and prefers being called “Mayor”.

Undeniably, Pres. Duterte is one of the simplest or probably the simplest president that the Philippines had so far. The former Davao City Mayor does not mind eating in carinderia.

There were several occasions when the President was spotted eating in eateries beside the streets in Davao City. Not only him but as well as his family were spotted eating in eateries several times.

Undeniably, the President’s simplicity is one of the things that many people like about him. He is like the face of an ordinary citizen – far from luxury.

Even in the way he is addressed, Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte has a request. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, he recently issued a directive telling officials to refrain from addressing him as “Your Excellency”. He prefers being called as “Mayor”.

“Stop calling me ‘excellency’. Do not call me ‘Your Excellency.’ I am not ‘Your Excellency’… I appreciate it more if you call me mayor,” the President expressed in a cabinet meeting according to the report.

In the memorandum released, the officials are asked to address him as “President Rodrigo Roa Duterte” only – without being called as “His Excellency” or “Honorable”.

Also, the said memorandum also mandates that the cabinet members were be addressed as “Secretary” only in official communications sent to the Office of the President. “Honorable” must not be used as well.

Meanwhile, it is stated clear in the memorandum that the government agencies and offices are free to address their officials as “Honorable” in documents and internal communication.
