Palace Says Pres. Duterte Will Announce Decision on MECQ Fate Tonight

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is set to reveal his decision on the areas under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) tonight, May 28.

The fight against COVID-19 in the Philippines is not yet over. Every day, there are still new cases of this coronavirus disease recorded by the Department of Health.

Currently, there is a total of 15,049 cases of coronavirus recorded in the country. According to DOH, 904 of the coronavirus patients died of the disease while 3,506 have recovered from it.

The entire Philippines is still under a community quarantine now to prevent the spread of the disease. Everyone must wear a face mask when outdoors and social distancing must be practiced.

Metro Manila, Cebu, and Laguna are under a Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) now. Most areas in the country are implementing the General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

The quarantine measures are set to expire this May 31. A decision is awaited on whether it will be lifted, extended, or modified.

Based on a recent report on GMA News, the Palace said that Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte will reveal the decision on the fate of the MECQ in Metro Manila and several other areas tonight, May 28.

According to the report, when asked if the Inter-Agency Task Force against COVID-19 recommended the shifting of MECQ to GCQ, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque refused to answer.

Roque stressed that the President will announce the decision tonight. It is amid the memo circulating and stating that Metro Manila will be under a GCQ from June 1-15.
